Table of contents
Tucked away in the Styrian Alps, this breathtaking library isn’t just beautiful , it’s a masterpiece of art, history, and architecture.
And the best part?
It’s just over an hour from Hallstatt, one of Austria’s most beloved travel destinations.
Founded in 1074 by the Benedictine monks, Admont Abbey has long been a centre of learning and culture.
The Admont Abbey Library (or Stiftsbibliothek Admont) is the largest monastic library in the world, and one of the most beautiful. The library, completed in 1776, was designed by architect Josef Hueber, who envisioned it as a “temple of knowledge” it’s part of the Benedictine Abbey of Admont, a spiritual and cultural centre for over 900 years.
Step inside, and you’re surrounded by:
- More than 70,000 volumes in the grand hall alone
- Baroque architecture that glows with white and gold elegance
- Frescoed ceilings by the artist Bartolomeo Altomonte, painted when he was over 80
- Sculptures by Josef Stammel, including “The Four Last Things” powerful works symbolising life, death, and eternity

The white and gold colour palette represents purity and enlightenment.

Secret passage
Did you know the breathtaking Admont Abbey Library in Austria hides secret doors behind its bookshelves? I had no idea until I looked closer! Those “shelves” actually open up to reveal spiral staircases leading to a hidden upper gallery that monks once used centuries ago. So cool!

Part of what makes Admont so special is its location. The Abbey sits at the edge of the Gesäuse National Park, surrounded by dramatic Alpine peaks and lush valleys.
When you step outside the library, you’re greeted by crisp mountain air and postcard-worthy scenery. It’s the perfect balance between culture and nature.
